POSITIVES Lifting, opening and filling were found to be either easier, or the same as filling a regular kettle. The push opening mechanism was reviewed positively and commented upon positively. The jumper was often a talking point and thought to be for insulation without prompting. The vertical pouring system prevented water pouring over the back of the cup when used by blindfolded participants. The colour based communication of blue = cold, red = hot, was universially understood across the product and the app. The app provoked a number of questions, and when its full functionality was explained, it was welcomed and liked by the testers. The aesthetic app was near universally understood, and all users understood the meaning of the graphical elements and were able to navigate the app with minimal verbal prompting. ISSUES Accessing the main body for cleaning was dividing, with a number of testers simply trying to put their hand through the lid, rather than remove the entire lid ring. During pouring, some users experienced some spillage and run-off down the body. BY IMAGINING USAGE FROM THE CONSUMER PERSPECTIVE, THE MOST INTUITIVE AND NATURAL CONSUMER EXPERIENCE WAS CONSTRUCTED The functional prototype consisted of a purchased kettle, retro-fitted with electronics that measured the water’s temperature, the volume of water in the kettle, provided temperature-related illuminated feedback and communicated with an app. The limitations of this prototype were that as it ran at 240V, the electronics couldn’t be tampered with as doing so would greatly increase the risks to user during testing, and cause issues during ethical approval. Instead, the retro-fitted electronics would be powered in isolation and would also require being turned on separately to the kettle. In essence it provided all the feedback and communication of the final design, but without the physical features for the blind, nor the on/off boiling control via the app.
