DEVELOPING A PROJECT SPECIFIC APP ALLOWED MORE REALISTIC TESTING OF THE FINAL PRODUCT EXPERIENCE
The official app released by the BLE Shield manufacturer, RedBear, was too limited in functionality for the project, forcing it to be deleted and a bespoke app written.
In order to do this, a developer’s licence was bought, allowing written apps to be uploaded directly to an iPhone without having to pass through Apple’s App Store testing, and allowing the Bluetooth functionality to be tested with a functioning phone (an impossibility to test on a computer based simulator).
Rather than beginning from scratch, a number of Xcode projects were available as part of the Software Developers’ Kit. Whilst these failed to provide enough functionality individually, they were cannibalised, combined and reworked to create a functional test app.
